News Round-up

There is a lot of evidence to suggest that Christopher Lee and Ian Holm are busy shooting on The Hobbit Films. Sir Christopher Lee had wanted to attend a LotR-Concert in Germany but he had to cancel and the reason given was because he had to shoot for The Hobbit. So well, there you have it.

Orlando Bloom is heading to New Zealand to shoot his scenes for the movies and I am sure that is going to make a lot of his fans ecstatic!

Time.com did a lineup of the most popular wizards of all time, due to the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows last Friday, and though Dumbledore takes first position, Gandalf comes in third. This is the description given:

“As if being a wizard wasn’t already cool enough, Gandalf is actually two wizards in one. At the start of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings novels — and the Peter Jackson movie trilogy they inspired — he’s the wise but aging Gandalf the Grey, a mentor to hobbits. But after battling a Balrog (yeah, look it up), he is transformed into the way more powerful, take-no-prisoners, all-around badass Gandalf the White. Bonus points: he’s played by Sir Ian McKellen in the movie.”

On an end note, I read that Mikael Persbrandt, who plays Beorn, is deemed both ‘amazing’ and ‘impressive’ by Peter J and Andy Serkis respectively. He has shot a few scenes and will continue shooting after the hiatus.

Ian McKellen Updates His Blog: “Congratulations, dear Watson”

Ian McKellen

So the news from McKellen’s blog is that Benedict has auditioned for a role in The Hobbit Films, and he has been added to the cast. Of course, we have not had a confirmation as to which character he shall be assaying. Though rumours are rife and the strongest one is that he shall be playing Bard the Bowman. 🙂

Though if you ask me, he has a very elven face. I would have liked to see him play Thranduil. Lee Pace is going to do a marvellous job, no doubt, but to me, Lee is more of a Legolas (yes, I heard that gasp, and no offence to the Bloom fans, just my humble opinion this… 😉 ) and Benedict is more of a Thranduil.

This is what McKellen writes in his blog:

The cat is out of the bag. The actor is named. The latest recruit to the Jackson troops is the superb Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock Holmes to Bilbo’s Watson. Martin Freeman let it slip when he picked up his BAFTA.

Martin told me he was “chuffed” about the prize. So was the entire crew back here in Wellington; and about Benedict. Now, what can he be playing in The Hobbit?

Philippa Boyens showed me a snippet of his screen-test, played in close-up into the camera. It was electrifying, vocally and facially. Yes, what can he be playing?

Peter J confirms that Orlando is back as Legolas

On his facebook page, Peter Jackson confirmed that Orlando Bloom will be rejoining the cast of The Hobbit Films as Legolas Greenleaf. I am sure this makes millions of fans worldwide go ‘ooooooooooh’. 🙂

Here is the status update from Peter J’s Facebook page.

Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas. I’m excited to announce today that we’ll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more. I’m thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older—and he doesn’t! I guess that’s why he makes such a wonderful elf.

Orlando Bloom Talks Hobbit

Orlando Bloom

Orlando Bloom finally confirms that he will be acting in The Hobbit in an interview for collider.com

Orlando talked about how excited he is to work with Peter Jackson again for The Hobbit, which he just received the full script for. Check out what he said:

Are you going to appear in The Hobbit?

BLOOM: Yeah, it’s looking like that. I’m really excited about going to see Pete [Jackson] again. It’s still a little up in the air, but the idea of working with Pete is fantastic. I can’t actually really talk too much about it, at this point. I just was given the script to piece through, so it’s quite exciting.

The whole script?

BLOOM: Yeah!

Will you have to do anything to physically prepare for that role again?

BLOOM: Are you telling me that I’ve put on weight, in the last 10 years? I just have to grow my hair really long and blonde again.

Isn’t he a younger version?

BLOOM: Yeah.
